How it works
Having premises HI-labelled involves analysing the organisation’s current working practices, collecting relevant documentation and demonstrating how the Hållbar Interiör criteria are met. The supporting information is then reviewed by an independent verification body.
The process can cover one or more existing premises over which the organisation has control.
1. Decide which premises to include
The first step is to decide which premises and which part of the organisation are to be included in the HI label. The organisation must have control over the premises and be able to provide basic information about the address, premises area, use and allocation of responsibilities.
2. Review the current situation
The organisation then reviews how the premises are currently used, developed and managed. The review identifies which parts of the criteria are already met, what documentation is available and which working practices or supporting information need to be supplemented. Several functions within the organisation may need to be involved, including those responsible for premises, sustainability, purchasing, furnishings and operational planning. The property owner may need to provide information in areas where the property owner has responsibility or control.
3. Collect supporting information and carry out the required analyses
The organisation collects the documentation needed to demonstrate how the criteria are met. This may include policies and procedures, premises analyses, information about energy and technical systems, inventories of furnishings, and information about fixed interiors and alterations carried out in the premises. This step also includes the analyses, inventories and climate impact calculations required for the premises included in the HI label.
4. Demonstrate how the criteria are met
The organisation compiles the supporting information and demonstrates how the criteria are met. The documentation must be relevant, sufficient, reliable and suitable for verification. Once the supporting information is complete, it is submitted to the verification body in accordance with the instructions for the HI label.
5. Have the premises independently verified
An independent verification body reviews the organisation’s documentation and conducts site visits at the premises included in the verification.Following successful verification, the organisation receives a verification statement and the right to use the Hållbar Interiör label. The verification is valid for five years, provided that no significant changes occur and that a mandatory document review is completed after 30 months.
What supporting information does the organisation need?
The supporting information required depends on the organisation’s operations, the conditions of the premises and any alterations carried out. The organisation will normally need access to information covering the following areas:
- the premises and parts of the organisation to be included
- the size, function and use of the premises
- policies and procedures for purchasing, waste management and furnishings
- analyses of the organisation’s premises requirements and how the premises are used
- the potential for future adaptation of the premises
- transport and commuting
- electricity supply, lighting controls and the building’s energy performance certificate
- an inventory and management plan for furnishings
- fixed interiors and alterations carried out during the previous five years
- climate data and climate impact calculations for fixed interiors and furnishings
The property owner may need to provide information about the electricity supply, technical systems, the building and previous alterations to fixed interiors.

What tools can be used?
The organisation can use its existing procedures, systems and tools to collect and manage information. The important consideration is that the documentation is relevant, traceable and suitable for verification.
The digital tool Hint has been developed to facilitate inventories, climate data management, documentation and monitoring within Hållbar Interiör.
Is support available?
Organisations that would like support can engage a qualified HI Coach. An HI Coach can help the organisation to:
- plan the work
- review the criteria
- identify the supporting information required
- carry out inventories and compile documentation
- use Hint
- prepare the supporting information for verification
The organisation decides whether to engage an HI Coach. An HI Coach does not conduct the independent verification.
