The Hållbar Interiör Criteria Council is responsible for developing and managing the criteria for the HI label. The Council ensures that the criteria are scientifically grounded, relevant and kept up to date with developments in research, legislation, standardisation and the market.
The Criteria Council is independent and comprises members with expertise from academia, business, the public sector and industry organisations. The members’ combined knowledge helps ensure that the criteria can be applied to different types of organisations and existing premises.
Hållbar Interiör is designed as a Type I environmental labelling programme in accordance with the principles of SS-EN ISO 14024:2023. The criteria must be objectively assessable and possible to verify through documentation.
The role of the Criteria Council
The Criteria Council is responsible for:
- developing and updating the criteria for the HI label
- ensuring that the criteria have a scientific and methodological basis
- monitoring developments in research, legislation, standardisation and the market
- assessing the need for revisions and new versions of the criteria
- considering feedback and experience gained from applying the criteria
- contributing to a transparent and broadly supported criteria development process
The criteria and methods are reviewed as new knowledge, practical experience and changing requirements affect the conditions for the sustainable development and management of premises.
How the Criteria Council works
The Criteria Council meets at least twice a year. Between meetings, members may be asked to review supporting documentation and comment on proposed changes.
The Council’s work may include:
- reviewing proposals for new and revised criteria
- assessing scientific and methodological supporting documentation
- monitoring how the criteria work in practice
- considering matters relating to scope, definitions and methods
- engaging in dialogue with relevant organisations and stakeholders
- participating in consultation processes ahead of major changes to the criteria

Serving as a member of the Criteria Council
Members are appointed based on relevant expertise and experience in the areas covered by the HI label. The composition of the Council should provide a broad knowledge base while safeguarding its independence.
Members are expected to:
- have expertise relevant to the role of the Criteria Council
- familiarise themselves with the Hållbar Interiör Criteria Document and its appendices
- participate in meetings of the Criteria Council
- review and comment on supporting documentation between meetings
- declare any potential conflicts of interest
- contribute objectively and independently to the Council’s work
The term of office is two years, with the possibility of extension in accordance with the rules governing the Criteria Council.
